Who´s Your Mama Now?
Who´s Your Mama Now have a warning on their Myspace that claims their music is "highly addictive". I could do without another vice so it´s with a little caution that I embark on this review.
Fool´s intro opens reminds me of Solid Air and then when the vocals come in I get a distinct Norah Jones/Eva Cassidy feel. Which isn´t such a bad thing, Solid Air is a masterpiece and Nora Jones proved with Not to Late that coffee table music can be interesting. Fool is a lovely track, all space and sparse arrangement that acts as a sounding board for Viara Ivanova´s rich vocal delivery, but it´s a bit like something you would hear in the background of a particularly mellow dinner party. However, judging by the amount of records that Jones and co have shifted WYMN could be onto something.
BW pictures (what´s wrong with black and white) maintains the laid back feel of Fool but plays out a more traditional song structure. It also serves as a reminder that WYMN are a band not a solo artist. Some of the guitar work is a little busy (Xose Figueroa clearly loves harmonics) and could benefit from being place wider and lower in the mix but overall adds to what could be another very solid album track.
Lyrically we are in very familiar territory on both these tracks. We´ve heard all this before and I can´t help but think theses tracks could benefit from a little personality injection. But try telling that to Chris Martin....he wouldn´t give a fuck.
So, am I off to rehab to cure my addictions? Unlikely, but I wouldn´t mind hearing more from these guys. Maybe I just haven´t recognised I have a problem yet.
