Track - Never Had Love
Lovely track makes me think of Steptoe and Son´s rag and bone business due to the great use of different instruments, considering the music was recorded by one man in an attic is great. Nice at first but does suffer a bit towards the end from a lack of tempo or lyrical changes.
Track - Catsuit
Lovely slow melody with some great lyrics, considering artists often write from personal experience, all I can say is I´m glad he hasn´t posted any pictures of himself in a catsuit. I am a sucker for a harmonica and think its a great way to fill gaps in the lyrical content of a song. This small ditty will have you bouncing your head side to side.
Track - Phantom Engineer
A different tempo that unlike the first two tracks has more of an upbeat lift to it with a nice showcase of his guitar skills. Faultless vocals again, however would be surprised if he spoke in the accent he sings in. If you imagine the Stone Roses unplugged this gives you some idea of this track, he is obviously a talented guitarist.
Track - Honey Bee
My least favourite track of an otherwise faultless display of musical talent. This track sounds like it should be played in a hotel lobby and sung by a slick gentleman in a white suit. This track is almost too experimental with needless little interludes of different noises, I´m sure at one point I heard the Rocky trumpets. Obviously has some sentimental reason for this song, not something I buy into at all.
Verdict
This guy has an amazing voice and if you are a fan of the Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev you´ll love his laid back style and abundance of improvisation. Order the album straight from his website and I´m sure you won´t be dissapointed. Unfortunately without a band touring is difficult and to produce the quality of sound he has in his homemade studio will be tricky. The sound is surely aimed mainly at the US market but I´m sure there is plenty of room in the Scottish scene for this guy.
