Halcyon
Its not about the money, its not about the clothes you wear, its not about the fame its all about being heard - having something to say and someone to listen. These are songs written by 5 guys that burst from the stage and strike a note in anyone whose ever loved, lost, drank, failed, triumphed or just wondered what the hell life is all about as the long nights draw to a close. We are Halcyon - pleased to meet you... LINE UP Vocals - Fraser Robb, Rhythm Guitar - Paul O'Donnell, Lead Guitar - Martin Rooney, Bass Guitar - David Harkins, Drums - Ross Glasgow
Halcyon - Litre of Gin
Nice intro with a clever guitar riff leading you into the vocals which come in reminiscent of a 90's American rock band. Drips emotion like a cranberries track and build up good tempo with some good major lifts and minor falls to quote Jeff B. Sounds very heavily influenced and whilst perfectly listenable its not something that will clucking for your next fix.
Halcyon - Last Lines
heavily distorted guitars bring this straight up to a tempo that makes you expect some real rock power, you won't be disappointed. Vocally similar to Metallica without the roughness which is good going, good guitar solo around 2 minutes in. Whether its heavier guitar or rougher vocals it never truly hits the peak that you would expect, the chorus actually falls in this song from the verse which grates on you the more you listen. Great guitar skills to bring you over the four minute mark, finishing this track at a very healthy 5 minutes.
Halcyon - Save Myself
Feels like Siamese Dreams, much lower tempo lulling you into a false sense of security. kicks in around 90 seconds and kicks up the beef on this, making it a typical soft rock love song. Very listenable that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack to Smallville or Spider-man movie, think Nickleback without the big nose and long hair. Would be good track live with the emotion coming across well on the recording, by far the strongest track of the bunch and worth the 4 minutes of your life to listen to, its not original but hell if something works then fair game.
Verdict
The music is not the most unique and isn't got me desperate to go back and try again but it does display promise for this band, with good tight sound quality and some talented musicians. Would like to see them break out their comfort zone more and push the boundaries of the tracks with a bigger sound to some of their chorus. In the current form these guys could definitely do the venue tour round the cities and be regulars in your Bannermans style venues.
