The Banana Sessions

On first hearing this band, I wasn´t sure if I´d accidentally popped on the soundtrack for Peter and the Wolf but on closer listening, this original Edinburgh band have some interesting moments with quirky tunes and some clever lyrics. Don´t let your kids get hold of any of these tracks or you´ll be listening to them on loop for the next 6 months. Stick with the tracks and you´ll start to enjoy them but on first listen, you might find yourself reaching for the skip button.

Track - The Drunken Doormouse

An upbeat tune with good harmonies going on, it´s the kind of song that gets in your head and will stay with you for the rest of the day although I´m not sure if you´ll maybe want it to. The extensive use of the flute during this track unfortunately makes it sounds a kids TV theme tune. A fun track but after a couple of listens, the novelty wears off a bit.

Track - Pesky Wabbit

Starts off well with a nice acoustic foot tapping rhythm but the flute begins to get a bit tiresome as the track progresses. It contains some nice vocals and a tempo change which descends into a Spanish flamenco at times.

Track - The Ballad Of Captain Malloy

Yes, it´s the flute again! This makes the song at first sound like a sea shanty but becomes a nice track to listen to with a slight KT Tunstall sound. Contains a great middle-8 which breaks into a slightly more menacing sound and sounds better for it.

Track - Green

Nice simple pop song, with good lyrics and really benefits from being stripped down and having no flute. This is the song that makes you take them more seriously than the previous tracks.
